EDUCATION CAMPAIGN ON BLOOD DONATION (ABCC)

Picture
3 WAYS TO SAVE LIFE

1. Whole Blood Donation

Whole Blood Donation is the most common type of blood donation. During this process approximately one pint of whole blood is donated. Each unit of whole blood is separated into 3 main parts: red blood cells, platelets and plasma.

Donating whole blood is safe and simple.

2. Double Red Cell Donation

Double red cell donors must also meet the following height, weight and hematocrit requirements:

  • Males: Minimum weight of 130 lbs., minimum height of 5'1"
  • Females: Minimum weight of 150 lbs., minimum height of 5'5"
  • Hematocrit (Iron Level): For both men and women the percent must be 40 or above.
3. Platelet Apheresis Donation

During a platelet apheresis donation, blood is drawn from the donor's arm and delivered through sterile tubing into a cell-separator machine. Platelets are stored at room temperature for up to five days.

How to donate blood

Preparation before donating blood

  1. Have enough rest and sleep.
  2. No alcohol intake 24 hours prior to blood donation.
  3. No medications for at least 24 hours prior to blood donation.
  4. Have something to eat prior to blood donation, avoid fatty foods.
  5. Drink plenty of fluid like water or juice.
 Steps in donating blood

  1. Have your weight taken.
  2. Register honestly and completely the donor registration form.
  3. Have your blood type and hemoglobin checked.
  4. A physician will examine the blood donor.
  5. Actual donation. The amount of blood to be donated will depend on the donor's weight and blood pressure. Either 350cc or 450cc and would usually take 10 minutes or less.
  6. A 5 to 10 minute rest and plenty of fluid intake is necessary after donation.
What to do after blood donation

  1. Drink plenty of fluids like water or juice.
  2. Refrain from stooping down after blood donation.
  3. Refrain from strenuous activities like:
    1. Lifting heavy objects
    2. Driving big vehicles such as bus, trucks, etc.
    3. Operating big machines
  4. Avoid using the punctured arm in lifting heavy objects.
  5. Apply pressure on the punctured site and lift the arm in case the site is still bleeding.
  6. If there is discoloration and swelling on the punctured site, you may apply cold compress for 24 hours and then hot compress for the next 24 hours.
  7. If there is dizziness, just lie down feet elevated. Drink plenty of juice, in just a few minutes or so it will pass.

Run for Fitness and Wellbeing by: Chita

Picture
Dawn was  barely breaking when I received  a call from the energetic and  enthusiastic secretary of Kool Earth Megs Lunn, who  phoned  me that Mayor William Lachica was already at the Kalibo International Airport, not to fly out,  but to participate in Kool Earth’s fun run for the second year.

The message of this year’s event remains the same as for the previous  year: to generate funds  and to raise awareness in our effort to make Kalibo a cleaner and greener  town. The categories were the same as last year. Male/female, 12 years old and under and  Male open and Female open.

Twenty five local establishments   generously donated money and gift items for the prizes. These include  sixteen members of the Aklan Medical Society,Holy Father Diagnostic Laboratory, UVI Pharmacy, Mia’s Drug Store, Motus Pharmacy, St Jude’ s Hospital, Lind’s Dry Goods  Store, Royal Supermarket, Avon Philippines, Bread & Butter/Filbakers, Cavanah Facial Centre, Pocydon Holdings/ Bakers Best, Bikers Club of Aklan, Aklan Valley  Spring Water, New Visayan Commercial, LGU-Hon. William Lachica, Ms. Wendy dela Cruz Heap, Mr. Raffy Leyson of BPI, Barangay Poblacion of Kalibo, Mr Arnold Penalba, The Carpenter-Igharas, Mr. Nilo Vilmon, Mr and Mrs.Nedy and Ailyn Placer, Cheng Capua, and of course the TRI-MEDIA and the Aklan Press Club for the mileage.

Four hundred and eighty seven participants registered for the event, a few more  than last year. Participants this year were: Bread & Butter, Star Glow,Mia’s Pharmacy, Philbikers, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines,PNP Aviation Security Group,  Wadeford, Vista Family, APPO, Numancia Integrated School, ASU-CIT. Philippine Army-Libas, Banga, Tigayon Elementary School, Alpha Phi Omega, Ati Bikers Club, OHM, Kalibo Fire Department, IJA Kalibo, Amigo Badminton, ACC, Javtes, NVC, St. Gabriel College, Tayco Family, Hilario Family, Pook Elementary School, Kalibo Elementary School, Garcia College of Technology, ANSHAT, Marian High , Aklan Running Club, St. Peter’s Life Plan and PYAP.

The winners of the fun run are:  Female 12 years old and under; First Place- Marlin Icawalo (Kalibo Elementary School)  our second placer last year. Second Place- Rizalie D. Pintor (Kalibo Elementary School) and third place- Jasel de la Vega (Pook Elementary School).

Female Adult: First Place- Jedelyn  Sinda (Pook, Kalibo) Second Place- Cherry May Regalado (ANSHAT) and Minnie Florencio, third place (Tigayon, Kalibo).

Male 12 years old and under: First Place- Dexced  Regalado (Malinao Elementary School) Second Place- Jefferson Remaldora (Kalibo Elementary School) and  John Carlo Zausa, third place (ANSHAT)

Male Adult: First place- Gepe F. Santillan (NVC- he was  also the winner of last years fun run) Second Place- Jayma Igis (ASU-CIT) and Nerry Zata – third place (ASU-CIT).

As we continue to offer up  our  time towards  supporting  Mother Nature, we slowly but surely  awake  the slumbering people of Kalibo. In some  of the places that I pass by when  going  to the town centre, I saw  people planting colourful plants in front of their houses  and a street free from  litter . I hope that before long we can achieve our  aims for the  future:  As the saying goes, “It is not  what we accumulate in this life, but what we have managed to  discard.”

I offer my heartfelt  thanks  to Megs Lunn, our energetic and dynamic secretary, to Dr Felma de la Cruz for her hard  work in finding donors. Also to Dr Cynthia de la Cruz, for all her  donations and her moral support. Thanks is also due to all of  the members and officers of Kool Earth- for their  continued support, enthusiasm and commitment  towards this noble cause.

Dengue Awareness

Picture
4S strategy against dengue.

1. Search and destroy possible breeding places of dengue-causing mosquitoes like flower pots, vases, discarded plastic bags, bottles, old tires, cans, earthen jars, coconut husks, roof gutters, water drums, and other containers that might hold clean stagnant water. Preventing dengue can be easier achieved by doing your part in keeping the environment clean. Change water in vases frequently. Make sure all water containers are kept covered.

2.  Self-protection measures include wearing long sleeves or long pants.  It is also best to avoid dark-colored clothes like dark shades of blue and black, as dark clothing has been observed to attract mosquitoes. Apply mosquito repellant on the skin to deter mosquito bites. Mosquito repellant lotions and liquid sprays are available on the market; however, parents are cautioned against using strong repellants on small children because of potentially harsh chemicals.  There are organic mosquito repellant alternatives such as all-natural citronella bug spray. You can also use mosquito coils, electric vapour mats and mosquito spray during the daytime. Screens and mosquito nets are also good deterrents against mosquitoes.

3. Seek early consultation because dengue is crucial.  See a doctor immediately if you show early signs and symptoms of dengue.

4. Say no to indiscriminate fogging. In the past, fogging was considered as a temporary solution against dengue-carrying mosquitoes. At present, fogging is only advisable and recommended when outbreaks and epidemics are positively determined in a particular area. Fogging can only kill the adult infected mosquito; it cannot get rid of the larvae, locally known as kiti-kiti. Indiscriminate fogging will only drive away other mosquitoes to other places to find new breeding grounds.

The first Materials  Recovery Facility in Ati atihan town  was inaugurated in conjunction with the Earth Day Celebration. It was given to Barangay Captain Rafael Anteza to open the event and welcome the attending guests, which he proceeded to do with vigour and with good humour. The event  was then addressed by Ms. Vicky Ramos- Antonino,  Co-Chairman of Provincial Tourism Council and  the daughter of Godofredo Ramos, the Father of Aklan. She is  a gentle, friendly lady upon whom anyone  meeting her can rely.  Her sincerity and her friendly  manner are quite  infectious but she is also a lady who does not beat around the bush. When she told one that she was going to pledge  a large sum of cash towards Kool Earth’s MRF project, I did not expect to received it on the same day. Thank you Ms. Vicky.

Retired  General  Efren  ‘E.Q’  Fernandez , President & CEO, Public Safety Benefit Mutual Fund, Inc., or  EQ as  his friends know him is also one of the mayoral candidates for the town of Kalibo, and in his message of support he said that in order for us to achieve something we must not look at how lowly  our job but rather we should enjoy it  and feel proud. ‘Think Big’ he said. He also mentioned that Kool Earth is not just about  building a Materials Recovery Facility but  also about building a community.

Barangay, Captain Jane Rebaldo also spoke,  representing Mayor Raymar Rebaldo in his absence, and also  Mr Glenn Sacapano, the hard working and very serious  Provincial Consultant of MRF who has successfully established an MRF site on Boracay. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone  attending  including a British national who is normally hesitant to attend such events because of the long speeches and repetitious  introduction of  guests. But the afternoon went without a hitch as all  of the speakers seemed aware of the limited time and  messages  were kept  brief but to a point.

These messages were followed  by a  demonstration by Mr. Sacapano on how to make slabs using shredded plastic, cement, and fine gravel. Everyone who  saw the finished products were most impressed such that some of the guests present  placed their own  orders. Ms. Antonino pledged P10,000 pesos to Kool Earth whilst Retired General Efren ‘EQ’ Fernandez  matched Ms. Antonino’s generous donation. My heartfelt  thanks to  you both.

A plaque of appreciation was presented  to Mrs. Roberta Marte-Belveder for her generous  offer to lend her  land to Kool Earth so that barangay Pook can start to  enjoy a plasticless environment. A further  plaque of appreciation was presented to Mrs. Maria Luz Marte- Reloj for her  hard work in acquiring the land, and for her financial support in helping to build the MRF site.

So many generous people came forward to help on the day, but  I would like to mention one man who from the moment I opened the gate of the site  was there performing  various work in preparation for the afternoon event. Thank you Mr. Roger Leyson. We need more people like you in our village. The Precious Women, together with their Chairman Ms. Josephine Doroteo, Board of Directors, Mrs. Margeline de la Rosa and Mrs. Benedicta Malapad and Kalipi President Ms. Estrella de la Cruz and other  KALIPI members  turned up in their group to show their  support for this noble cause.

How was the MRF  established in Pook?  Through sheer hard work, determination and dedication. Kool  Earth is advocating that it is  we,the people of this planet who  have to change. If we want  change to happen in our lives, then we should stand together and not be afraid of change, because whether we like it or not, we  will change anyway. Kool Earth is challenging the people not just of Aklan but all those who read this message, to be brave  and face all the challenges that come our way so that we can  make this planet  a wonderful place in which to live.

Kool Earth said that the  people of this planet are precious, and that we are special and that we deserve the best, but it is up to every  human being to deliver what is best for them.  To those who Have  participated in this noble cause, however small or big the effort that they have made , Kool Earth officers and members would like to express their appreciation for your effort. Please keep up the good work!

As the  Earth Day organizers said, Environmental Security is the Highest Form of National Security. So let us help our public servants to keep us secure.
